Top Selection

The Substance

Coralie Fargeat's bold satire addresses the tyranny of female beauty as well as the dreaded aspects of ageing. Hollywood star Demi Moore presents a masterful performance as Elisabeth, an aging celebrity forced into starring in a workout series on the small screen. Pushed out due to her slimy boss Harvey, she turns to a secretive and gruesome procedure called "The Substance". This produces a youthful duplicate called Sue, leading to a progressively parasitic dynamic between the two. Friday 17 October, Paramount Plus

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This Agatha Christie-esque thriller includes Keira Knightley playing Laura, a skilled journalist who takes a break from reporting on world issues to join a luxury cruise with an ailing Norwegian shipping heiress and charitable figure, her husband, plus additional extremely wealthy guests. Yet once an enigmatic female goes overboard during the evening and all passengers claims she was never there, her journalistic curiosity kick in. Out now, Netflix

Presence Film

The acclaimed director challenges his creative boundaries in this clever supernatural story filmed completely from the viewpoint of a ghost. After a clan featuring mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe moves into their recent residence, the lens – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. The teen shows signs of sensing the ghostly being, and it seems guarding her. But why? It's a fun idea that remains concise, including a revelation that could catch you off guard. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, Sky Cinema

This Self-Referential Film

Nicolas Cage fully commits to his cult stardom in this meta comedy caper. He acts as an egotistical Hollywood actor called Nicolas Cage who agrees to a million-dollar gig to appear at a celebration in Mallorca for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Recruited by government spies to spy on the potential kingpin, the actor's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” comes in handy. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, on Channel 4

This Creepy Thriller

Derrickson's contained scarefest holds up well despite the lack of a continuation. Located in 1978 Denver, several disappearances has rendered the youth anxious. Once Finney gets captured by “the Grabber” and held captive in a dungeon, he dreads a terrible outcome. However, the old telephone mounted nearby keeps ringing, with eerie communicators giving advice, as the intuitive nightmares of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. An effective horror. October 11th, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel

This Dramatic Portrait

In the struggle between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for materialism in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish biopic about the fallen religious broadcaster and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield acts as the venal Jim, who states at the beginning, asserting religious justification for riches. Both individuals commence profiting from the nation's religious faith. It's an extravaganza of poor styling, bad makeup and hypocrisy, yet Jessica Chastain succeeds to show the character with compassion. October 14th, 1.15am, the Film4 channel

Black Bag

This week's another release from the filmmaker presents a intelligence thriller as precise as the polo necks used by the actor's UK spy. He is tasked to discover a double agent inside the organization out of five possibilities – among them is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Each performer are experts of understated style, resulting in an engaging mind game of deception or honesty takes place. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela participate the intelligent intelligence fun. Friday 17 October, various showings, Sky Cinema
