The Former President's Woke Alarm Misses The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" agendas pose an grave threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true challenge confronting the EU is not societal but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Separating Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. Over this period, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Question

This widening economic gap stems from superior efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe entering at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
